Masala Milk, A Treat For The Traditional Taste Buds

Masala Milk, A Treat For The Traditional Taste Buds

In scorching summer, masala buttermilk is a prevalent drink in Indian households. Indians choose masala buttermilk for its soothing and refreshing effects to quench their thirst. In contrast, Indians go for masala milk or masala doodh during winter, and Indian winter dishes are redolent with ghee and spices.

Masala milk is mixed with various spices that lend flavour to the milk. It is the second most popular drink after masala chai in India. It is also a healthier alternative, and people often drink it daily for various health benefits. It does not contain caffeine which is usually harmful to health. But it does deliver all the benefits of milk in a lip-smacking drink.

How to prepare masala milk?

The simplest way of preparing masala milk is by simmering milk with various powdered spices and nuts. Using full-fat milk gives it a more decadent taste. We can keep it simple or jazz it up by garnishing it with sliced nuts and saffron threads.

One of the best ways of quickening the process of preparing masala doodh is by making the milk masala powder ahead of time and storing it. You can add it to simmering milk and enjoy it every day.

Milk Masala Powder

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cashew nuts
  • 1 cup almond nuts
  • ½ cup pistachio
  • 10 cardamoms
  • 10 black peppercorns
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp nutmeg powder
  • 1 tsp saffron

Instructions

  • Dry roast all ingredients separately.  Sugar, nutmeg powder, and saffron in a broad, thick-bottomed pan for a minute.
  • Keep them aside and cool down completely.
  • In a mixer, blend all ingredients and sugar to a coarse texture. We can also make it as smooth as we want.
  • Mix well with the nutmeg powder and saffron.
  • Transfer to a jar or an airtight container and store in the refrigerator.

Usage

  • Use two tablespoons of this powder for each glass of milk. Add to simmering milk and boil for 10 mins.
  • The masala milk is ready to serve.

While making masala milk powder is relatively easy as all ingredients are available quickly, it creates less hassle by buying home-like ready-made milk masala powder which has a similar taste and feels like a home-made masala. While buying, do remember to check the expiration date.

Conclusion
